Intern – Administration

Responsibilities

The selected interns are expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Follow up on actions related to the administration of the human resource activities, e.g., recruitment, placement, relocation, promotion, performance appraisal, job classification, reviews, separation, etc., ensuring consistency in the application of regulations and procedures.
  • Perform a wide range of office support and administrative functions.
  • Responds or drafts responses to routine correspondence and other communications; uses standard word processing package to produce a wide variety of large, complex documents and reports.
  • Generates a variety of standard statistical and other reports, work orders, etc., using various databases.
  • Proofreads documents and edits texts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation and style, and for adherence to established standards for format.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the Job Description database by scanning and posting onto the database

Statistical Analysis Specialist

Task description

Under the direction of and reporting to the Head of the Environment and SDG Statistics Unit of the Capacity Development and Innovation Branch of the Division for Early Warning and Assessment, the Junior Statistical Analyst will undertake the following activities:

  •  Assists in the exploration, identification, and acquisition of sources of statistical data to determine their suitability for use in advancing the goals of the organization.
  •  Enables broader use of statistical data sources by applying quality methods to structure, clean, format, parse, and standardize for analytical use.
  •  Assists in capacity building of Member States to leverage the use of statistical analysis in support of their national sustainable development priorities
  •  Supports UNEP’s work on nature, pollution, and climate with statistical analytics that assist in accomplishing UNEP’s mandates.
  •  Contributes to the design and develops environmental statistics products to reveal insights and provides an understanding or knowledge of environmental data that would otherwise not be detected without the application of advanced analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, use of relevant algorithms, and computational approaches.
  •  Assists in promoting the use of statistical analysis through capacity development and the development of products, tools, and processes to extend member state statistical capabilities.
  •  Guides, trains, and supervises general service staff, as required.
  •  Implements databases, data collection systems, data analytics, and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
  •  Contributes to statistical data content and quality, etc. in UNEP’s World Environment Situation Room.

Requirements

Required experience

  • 3 years of experience in relevant fields; of which at least two years of progressively responsible experience in statistical information management and applied statistical analytics is required.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence, machine learning, or related area is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in statistical analysis and facility with statistical methodologies and metadata, database management, is required.
  • Experience with team and/or project management is desirable.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate they are organized, reliable, and efficient. Digital-Ecosystems Interface Specialist

Task description

The incumbent will support the overall core team of the UN Decade on Ecosystems Restora-tion Secretariat while based within UNEP’s Communication Division, as well as the different arms of the UN Decade such as the Task Forces, partnership network, governance bodies, as well as with the Multi-Partner Trust Fund. Specifically, the International UNV will undertake the following tasks:

  • Improving the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s digital presence (see www.decadeonrestoration.org), measured by such Key Performance Indicators like monthly page views, bounce rate, user journeys, etc.
  • Working closely with the UNEP Communication Web team on identifying user needs and developing new user stories, programming new functionalities based on these needs.
  • Supporting the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s vast network of partners by onboarding new partners and restoration initiatives to the digital interface.
  • Connecting online-users to the resources, knowledge, and tools they need to support restoration on the ground.
  • Connecting on the ground restoration efforts to the UN Decade’s digital interface.
  • Tracking the impact of combined UN Decade efforts on the ground – measured through such Key Performance Indicators (KPI) like number and type of organizations involved, number of volunteers involved, hectares and types of ecosystems covered, regions represented, volunteers and employees engaged, etc.
  • Selecting content for and running the UN Decade’s monthly newsletter, closely monitoring KPIs such as absolute and relative opening rates, user journeys, links clicked, etc.
  • Supporting UN Decade Partners by coordinating monthly UN Decade Learning Sessions, aiming at such KPIs as number of people registered, regional, gender, and eco-system diversity, number of people attending, number of materials accessed, etc.

Circular Economy Specialist

Task description

The UN Volunteer position is in the Resources and Markets Branch of the Industry and Economy Division (IED) at UNEP HQ in Nairobi, Kenya. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals, and the Chief of the Resources and Markets Branch. Specifically, the International UNV will undertake the following tasks:

  •  Lead consultation process with stakeholders, including businesses, governments, and other stakeholders and regional and global platforms on the circular economy, and coordinate public reviews of documents
  •  Support the organization of meetings, webinars, conferences, workshops on the issues of circular economy and its application in different industrial sectors
  •  Critically analyse value chains to assess their impacts, and identify hotspots for reduc-ing resource consumption and waste
  •  Use your knowledge and technical expertise to carry out research and offer innovative solutions and circular economy recommendations for stakeholders
  •  Collaborate with partners like WTO, UNIDO, Regional Economic Commissions, Regional Development Banks in order to develop a high-quality and consistent strategy including policy and programs that benefit the environment.
  •  Keep a mapping on UNEP’s circular economy activities and support coordination of internal cooperation meetings.

Environmental Rights Specialist

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the responsible Legal Officer in the Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit of the Environmental Rule of Law Branch in the Law Division the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  •  Support the implementation of Secretary-General’s Call to Action for Human Rights in particular Area 5 on Climate Justice
  •  Implement OHCHR-UNEP joint activities on environmental rights;
  •  Support UNEP’s work on environmental human rights defenders;
  •  Collaborate with partners in advancing the right to a healthy environment;
  •  Engage with UN human rights mechanisms including treaty bodies, Special Procedures;
  •  Support integration of the right to a healthy environment in multilateral environmental agreements;
  •  Assist Member States to address priorities in the nexus of human rights, gender equality, and the environment;
  •  Conduct legal research on a diverse range of assigned issues related to the right to a healthy environment;
  •  Support capacity building of UNEP staff in human rights, gender equality, and the environment;
  •  Support the production of websites, publications, posters, and public information activities; and,
  •  Support various meetings on human rights and environment including through preparing relevant documents. Results/Expected Outputs
