Research & Design Lead
Reporting to the Research and Design Tech Lead the role holder will be responsible for scouting, developing & testing prototypes & piloting, refining and adopting new technologies to solve current problems, improving operation efficiencies and to create new platforms that support new business opportunities. Working with partners, Project teams, Squads as well as virtual IT delivery teams to implement various projects and business deliverables. Break down complex requirements into simple trackable tasks. Be committed to high quality output and delivery on time.
The main duties are:
- Scout new technologies and vendors to enable innovation and identify technical enablers
- Developing and testing prototypes
- Piloting, refining and adopting new technologies and partner solutions
- Responsible for Solutions Design and specifications with Quarterly target focus
- Support setting up of crowdsourcing initiatives to generate innovative ideas and concepts
- Coordinate with other engineers, management and partners on research and design work
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for research and design initiatives by sourcing, developing and driving new technology capabilites.
- Responsible for delivering 70% of the projects on time
- Ensure agile is implemented in all of the projects
- Maintain an accurate registry of all research and design projects with various statuses and ensure stakeholders are appraised at all times
Leadership:
- Align with business product leads & PMO on project KPI’s, milestones and timelines
- Attend relevant meetings to align with business and customer needs needs
- Regular team and one-on-one engagements
- Build the team skillset as per digital skills priority areas.
- Team performance management
- Provide budget inputs for research and design solutions.
- Drive technology and platform discussions
Business Analysis:
- Weekly Delivery reporting to BU HoDs and Senior Managers on the status of their deliverables
- Responsible for gathering, detailing and documenting all business requirements
- Development of use cases that align and guide research and design initiatives
Solutions Design:
- Ensure test plans cover all aspects of Business Requirements and existing business rules
- Responsible for Solutions Design to meet business requirements and non-functional requirements
- Drive new solutions leveraging technology that inform evolution
- Collaboratively oversee the development/configuration of solutions as per agreed designs
- Provide advisory input into all new system considerations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Science/computer science/Engineering/Business related.
- Strong business acumen and mindset
- 5+ years of technical experience in a busy IT development environment, 2 years of which must include experience in designing systems and solutions.
- 3+ years’ Experience in Technical Leadership of large IT projects
- Team player who is skilled at building up and managing stakeholder relationships successfully
- Ability to persuade stakeholders and to champion effective techniques through delivery
- Ability to drive initiatives in new areas
- A curious and innovative mind that built things.
- Love for new technologies that purposefully drive impact

Billing Engineer – Revenue Management Support
We are pleased to announce the position of Billing Engineer – Revenue Management Support in the Digital IT Department within the Technology Division. In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below.
Reporting to the Manager – Revenue Management Support the position holder will act as Billing Engineer for Safaricom, for Revenue Management Support team towards supporting operations and maintenance of Revenue Management systems for Converged Billing system (CBS), Mediation system, Provisioning, UVC, and other Billing related systems
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure Bill run, reporting, CDR delivery, provisioning is delivered in a timely manner as per SLA
- Responsible for ensuring conformance to security standards for Billing systems.
- Responsible for Revenue Management support including but not limited to availability, performance and reliability of Billing systems.
- Responsible for implementation and integration of new Billing hardware/software, installation and integration projects
- Responsible for addressing customer complaints, requests, systems faults and on call for emergency response
- Reporting on systems performance, monitoring alert systems, tickets and incidents
- Backup management of all Billing systems.
- Version management of all Billing systems within agreed version levels.
- Business continuity execution as per Safaricom BCP policy.
- Incident and problem management in line with SLA agreed with various stakeholders.
- Optimization of the Billing systems Internal Process to ensure optimal operations through initiatives such as automation.
- Liaise closely with Revenue Management Planning, Products and PMO to ensure that new products and services are delivered with the right quality
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge in Billing & Charging domain
- Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix, scripting, Databases
- Strong planning, design and problem-solving skills
- Experience in DevOps, Software design/development skills, Java or python programming
- Good and effective communications skills, both orally and in writing
- Bachelor’s in computer science, Engineering, Science, IT, Telecommunication or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years working experience in the Telecommunications, financial services sector or similar industries in relevant field of Design, Planning & Support
- Experience of Huawei Convergent Billing System (CBS)

- BSc /B-Tech in computer Science/Electrical and communication/ Telecoms, Engineering, or a similar field.
- At Least 5 years’ experience as cloud engineer, Systems administrator, Network administrator or analyst in a multifaceted business environment with integrated/mixed windows and major UNIX/Linux server environment.
- Above 5 years’ experience in a busy IT or Telecommunications environment –Involved in Strategy Modeling, Planning, Design and Optimization of compute and storage infrastructure
- AWS and GCP Cloud knowledge and deployment models.
- Experience in working with Terraform, Ansible infrastructure as code platform to automate various aspects of infrastructure configuration, provisioning, and management
- Experience working with agile methodologies, such as Scrum, Kanban, XP, BDD and TDD.
- Strong data analytical skills, analytical thinking, attention to details and ability to identify solutions to complex problems.
