Org. Setting and Reporting

Applications are sought for a communication internship position within the office of the Regional Representative of the Regional Office for Eastern Africa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ROEA). The internship programme offers a practical learning experience in context of promoting the rule of law and human security and provides interns with the opportunity to work in a multicultural intergovernmental organization.

This internship position is offered for an initial period of six months, starting from November/December 2023. The Internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work 5 days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the Deputy Regional Representative, UNODC Regional Office in Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya.

Responsibilities

The interns shall undertake the following duties:

– Support the collection, review and documentation of human-interest stories and other relevant information for the purpose of effective communications.
– Support in developing and implementing effective plans and frameworks for communication and social media use.
– Develop presentations and other briefing material as may be requested.
– Conduct research on crime prevention and criminal justice issues.
– Help develop articles, amplification toolkits and communication strategies for key projects and initiatives, milestones, and publications.
– Perform research on specific topics and produce working papers, reports, summaries, analyses, briefings, presentations, and studies.
– Participate in the planning of the Programme’s activities, such as meetings, workshops, conferences and trainings, as well as draft reports and minutes.
– Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches.
– Support the preparation of briefing material and other documentation for meetings and events with stakeholders and partners, including other UN agencies;
– Support writing, reviewing and updating social media content to raise visibility of the Programme’s work.
– Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

– Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

– A degree in law, international relations, criminology or political science is desirable.

– Be computer literate in standard software applications.

– Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

– Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations
