President William Ruto on Wednesday, February 22, announced over 12,000 job opportunities in the upcoming exercise of cleaning Nairobi river

Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi River Commission, in Korogocho, Nairobi County,  Ruto noted that his government had plans to accommodate a big chunk of jobless residents in Nairobi into the opportunities in partnership with the County Government.

The jobs, he noted, will prioritize the youth and women in the project scheduled to commence in March 2023.

He directed the Members of Parliament and Members of the Nairobi County Assembly to liaise with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in ensuring that each ward presents 150 candidates for the jobs.

“The Governor, the Senator, all MPs and MCAs will participate in ensuring that at least 150 young people and women in every ward are identified for this assignment,” he noted.

The new recruits will take part in a wide range of upcoming activities including planting trees, cleaning water bodies and greening the estates in the country’s capital.

He affirmed that the plan to regenerate Nairobi rivers and amenities will continue in line with his government’s plans of revamping the living conditions of Nairobi residents, adding that violators of the sewage regulations will meet the full wrath of the law.

According to the Head of State, the new exercise will present fresh and substantive efforts to supplement all previous efforts aimed at realising the goal of regenerating key water bodies.

“We have a programme already funded by the African Development Bank and other partners for the establishment, construction and installation of a proper sewage system, especially in Westlands.

“Those who are polluting our rivers with stage I put you on notice,” a firm President Ruto remarked.

In addition, the President revealed plans to complement the cleaning exercise with the Affordable Housing plan as part of his government’s agenda of providing decent living conditions in Nairobi.

In December 2022, the President established the Nairobi River Commission comprising members drawn from various backgrounds to lead in the process of rehabilitating rivers in the city.
